Guide for Unemployed Members

As unemployed there are a number of rules you must follow to maintain your eligibility for unemployment benefits. These rules are established by law to guarantee that you receive the benefits you are eligible for and to ensure that you are available for work.

We have compiled the most important information in this guide to give you a clear overview and answers to the most common questions. If you need to revisit this guide, you can always find it through the checklist on the frontpage of Mit AKA.

We are your lifeline if you are have any questions that are not answered in this guide. Please do not hesitate to call or write to us.

Guide for Unemployed Members

The first thing you need to do is register as unemployed

If you have not done so yet, you need to register as unemployed on jobnet.dk, which is the job center's website.

Just graduated?

If you have already changed your membership status from student member to graduate, you can skip this part.

If you have not yet changed your membership status, here is some important information:

No later than 14 days after you have received your last grade, you have to fill in the form Skift medlemsstatus fra nyuddannet til studerende (you will find the form when you log on to Mit AKA). This will ensure your right to unemployment benefits.

If you have not been a student member, the same 14-day rule applies to ensure your eligibility for unemployment benefits. In this case you must have applied for membership no later than 14 days after receiving your last grade

How to Get Unemployment Benefits

While you’re searching for a job, unemployment benefits provide you with financial security.

Your application for unemployment benefits (Ledighedserklæring)

To receive unemployment benefits, you must complete a Ledighedserklæring. You will find a link to the form on the checklist on the front page of Mit AKA. Once we have processed your application and approved your right to unemployment benefits, you will receive a letter from us at Mit AKA.

Fill out the benefit card (ydelseskort) every month

At the end of each month, you have to log on to Mit AKA and fill out the benefit card (ydelseskort) in order to receive your unemployment benefits. You use the benefit card to let us know if you have had any paid work, vacation or sick days.

As you continue reading this guide, you will find more information about the rules for registration of sickness and vacation.

Fill out your benefit card at the end of each month

You can fill out the benefit card 1 week before the last day of the month. If you do this, the benefits will be in your account on the last banking day of the month.

You need to fill out your benefit card – at the latest – 1 month and 10 days after the last day of the month in question, i.e. the deadline for sending in the benefit card for the month of July would be September 10.

Create or update your CV at jobnet.dk

Create/update and activate your CV before the first meeting with us – and no later than two weeks after becoming unemployed. You will receive an e-mail notification as soon as we have approved your CV. We will remind you of this on the checklist at Mit AKA.

Requirements for your CV at jobnet.dk

In order to get your CV approved, it is important that you describe:

  • Which jobs you are applying for
  • Your qualifications (you have to fill out the field even though it is not a required field on jobnet.dk)
  • Your previous jobs
  • Your education
  • Your contact information. As a minimum, write your postal code and your phone number, so that employers can see where you live, and can contact you.

Dagpengetællere - Follow your use of unemployment benefits

1 month of benefits equals 160.33 hours. You can receive unemployment benefits for 2 years within a period of 3 years, which equals 3,848 hours in total. As a graduate, however, you are only entitled to unemployment benefits for 1 year within a 2-year period.

At Mit AKA under Dagpengetællere, you can keep track of your use of benefits and see how many hours you have worked during the period you have received benefits.

Avoid waiting days, for which you do not receive benefits

Once every 4 months, while being unemployed, there is a so-called waiting day (karensdag). This is a day for which you do not receive benefits. You can avoid the waiting day, if you work more than 148 hours within that 4-month period.

At Mit AKA under Dagpengetællere, you can see how many hours of work you still need in order to avoid the waiting day.

Meetings

In the first 3 months you are unemployed, Akademikernes A-kasse is your primary contact regarding your job search. This means that the mandatory meetings you have to attend are held with us.

After 3 months of being unemployed - or more, if you have had work during this period - the job search contact passes to the job centre.

If you do not show up for a meeting with us or the job centre, you will not receive benefits starting from that day and until you contact the other part, you were supposed to be meeting with.

How the Meetings are Booked

The first meeting with us will be booked for you. You will receive meeting notices from us in your Mit AKA inbox. You need to book the subsequent meetings yourself. We will notify you when it is time for you to book a meeting.

You will be given a deadline to book the meeting, and if you do not book within the specified timeframe, you will be deregistered as unemployed on jobnet.dk. You will not be eligible for unemployment benefits on days when you are deregistered, so in that case you must re-register as soon as possible.

Of course, you are always welcome to call us if you encounter any difficulties when booking a meeting.

Availability for Work

While receiving benefits, you are required to be available for employment opportunities. This means that you are obliged to apply actively for jobs you can maintain and accept relevant jobs and job activation from your job centre.

Availability for work – what does it mean?

The concept of availability is central to your eligibility for unemployment benefits, which means that:

  • From your first day of unemployment, you are required to apply for jobs – both inside and outside your profession. This could include applying for posted jobs, submitting unsolicited applications and using your network to find job openings.
  • You are obliged to accept jobs referred by Akademikernes A-kasse or your job centre at a day’s notice. It is, therefore, important that you check your e-mail daily and that you live and remain in Denmark.
  • As a full-time insured member, you have to be willing and able to work 37 hours a week on normal pay and employment conditions. Part-time members must be available for up to 30 hours of work a week.
  • You have to be prepared to apply for and accept work entailing up to a total of 4 hours of travel per day by public transport.
  • If you work reduced hours and receive supplementary unemployment benefits, you still have to apply for full-time jobs.
  • You need childcare for your children. If you do not have access to childcare outside the opening hours of the daycare, you have to inform us. If you have been unemployed for more than 3 months, you have to inform your job centre instead. If you fail to do so, the job centre can refer you to a job or a work activity outside the opening hours of the daycare. If you reject a job or an offer of activation due to childcare issues, and you have not previously informed the job centre about this, you risk 3 weeks of quarantine.

In addition to the above, you are required to attend meetings, as described above. There are other requirements relating to your job search - read about these in the following section.

Job Search

If you have a full-time insurance, you need to apply for full-time jobs, whereas members with a part-time insurance have to apply for jobs with a minimum of 30 hours per week.

Your job search efforts have to be serious and realistic. This means that you should apply for any kind of job that you can carry out. In case there are not enough posted jobs to apply for within your field that match your qualifications and experience, you need to extend your search to other professions and expand it geographically.

  • You have to apply for 1-2 jobs per week - a minimum of 6 jobs in total in the course of 4 weeks.
  • These 6 jobs have to be jobs in Denmark.
  • At least 3 out of 6 jobs have to be full-time jobs.
  • After 3 months of unemployment at least 3 out of 6 jobs applied for have to be solicited ones.

Update your Job Log Once a week

You need to keep track of all your job applications in your Job Log at jobnet.dk to show that you’re actively looking for work. We receive this info from jobnet.dk, and if it does not look like you have applied for enough jobs, we will send you a reminder. If you are not active in your job search, it means you’re not “available for work,” and you could lose your unemployment benefits.

Here’s what counts as a job search:

  • Applying for advertised jobs
  • Sending out unsolicited applications
  • Networking or getting in touch with someone who has the power to hire you

On top of that, every 4 weeks, you need to upload an example of a job application and a CV you have sent - this also goes in the Job Log at jobnet.dk.

You get unemployment benefits on weekdays that happen to be public holidays. But you are expected to search for jobs on those days unless you have reported to jobnet.dk that you are taking those days off for a holiday.

When you get a job

When you get a job, please notify us 6 weeks prior to starting your new job, we can reduce the requirements for your job search. We will then register you as having found a job, and as such, you no longer have to:

  • attend meetings
  • apply for jobs

However, you are required to take on possible relevant jobs that the job centre considers you able to hold in the period up until you start your new job.

It is important that you deregister as unemployed on jobnet.dk from the first day of your employment and not from the day, you sign your contract of employment. You can deregister as unemployed 30 days before you begin your new job.

At Mit AKA you will find the button Jeg har fået job where you can let us know if you have a job on hand.

Active Employment Measures

You are required to attend job active employm, ent measures that your job centre arranges for. They are obligated to do so at the latest when you have been unemployed for 6 months. You can also suggest activities that the job centre could add to your job search plans (Min Plan).

Active employment measures can consist of various types of training, practical experience or subsidised employment with public and private employers.

When attending a mandatory active employment measure, you still have to be actively looking for work and available for job opportunities. You may, however, be exempted from this obligation if your job centre agrees to it.

Quarantine

If you have terminated your employment yopurself, there will be a quarantine period of 111 hours (the equivalent of 3 weeks). During this period, you will not receive unemployment benefits. You still have to register as unemployed on jobnet.dk on the first day after your notice period. This applies regardless of whether it was a full-time or a part-time job. Please note that you are also obliged to be actively applying for jobs, update your job log and fill out your benefit card during these 3 weeks.

The quarantine rules also apply if you reject a job referral or if you without a valid reason reject or cut short actrive employment measures arranged by your job centre. If you do not show up for your first day of your scheduled employment training/activities, this will be considered a rejection of the activity.

If you are quarantined twice during a 12-month period, or if you are not available for the job opportunities, you will lose your right to unemployment benefits. You will only regain your right to unemployment benefits once you have worked more than 300 hours in a continuous 3-month period. The work must be carried out on normal pay and employment conditions.

Register Holidays and Report Illness

You have to register holidays and report illness at jobnet.dk. You do not need to inform Akademikernes A-kasse, because we are automatically informed.

Report illness at jobnet.dk on the day you become ill. If you are planning a holiday, register your holiday at jobnet.dk at least 14 days in advance.

At Mit AKA you will find entries to jobnet.dk, where you can register holiday and report illness. When you click on the buttons Meld ferie (register holiday)/Meld sygdom (report illness), you can read more about deadlines and find guidance on where at jobnet.dk to register holiday and report illness. You can also read about the deadlines for reporting illness and registering holidays below.

Illness

The first 14 days of a period of illness, you will receive benefits from us. It is important that you report illness at jobnet.dk on the first day, you are ill.

When you have done so, you do not need to attend meetings with the job centre or us. Please register at jobnet.dk on the first day you are well.

If you are ill for more than 14 days, you will receive illness benefits from your local municipality. We automatically notify the municipality about this.

When you plan a holiday

If you are planning a holiday, you have to register your holiday at jobnet.dk 14 days in advance. This is also the case if you are attending any form of activation.

If you register your holiday within the 14-day deadline, the job centre and we will not call you in for meetings during your holiday.

If you have earned holiday benefits (feriedagpenge) from us, you can apply for them at Mit AKA.

Possibilities and Approvals

There are several options for you to stay active as unemployed and get experience added to your CV while you are unemployed. You can do voluntary work, work reduced hours, apply for jobs abroad, attend courses or start your own projects. However, there are rules and regulations that you need to know about, and you always need an official permission from us before you start any of these activities.

You can work reduced hours

If you work reduced hours, you can receive supplementary unemployment benefits for 30 weeks. You have to fill out a form about your job, so that we can assess whether your part-time job will affect your unemployment benefits. You can find the form at Mit AKA under Blanketter -> Ledighed ->  Arbejde på nedsat tid.

If you are permanently employed (fastansat) with a notice period, you have to get a release certificate (frigørelsesattest) from your employer in order to be eligible for supplementary unemployment benefits. The release certificate ensures that you can stop working with 1 day’s notice if you find work with longer working hours.

We need to receive your release certificate no later than 5 weeks after you were hired. It is the date on your contract that counts – not the date you start working.

The course should be a maximum of 19 hours per week. The course cannot be part of a full-time education that gives you the right to apply for SU (The Danish students' Grants and Loans Scheme).
